Brockway DiCOM©

Alternative Waste Treatment Facility Tour

Tour 1: Wednesday Morning Tour: 8.30 am – 12.30 pm

OR

Tour 2: Wednesday Afternoon Tour: 1.30 pm–5.30 pm

Forget endless windrows and acres of unstabilised compost lying about the place: be one of the first to see the latest advancement—if not the future—in MSW composting. Construction of Stage 1 of the innovative DiCOM© AWT Facility at the WMRC’s Brockway Waste Transfer Station in Shenton Park is scheduled to be in late July 2008 and it will be in the commissioning phase of the project.

The Brockway DiCOM© Facility is the first commercialisation of this patented Western Australian developed technology. The DiCOM© process is cutting edge, utilising pressurised static in-vessel aerobic and anaerobic composting over a 21 day cycle to complete the conversion of MSW into stable compost. Not only does DiCOM© capture all emissions but the entire process is energy surplus, allowing the export of green energy into the grid. Each tour includes a video presentation on the DiCOM© process and an escorted tour of the facility where delegates will have the opportunity to view the MRF and 800 tonne capacity DiCOM© process tank.

Wangara Materials Recovery Facility & Mindarie Regional Council Tour

Wednesday Full Day Tour: 9.30 am – 3.30 pm

Lunch sponsored by Mindarie Regional Council.

Wangara MRF

The Wangara MRF is owned by the City of Wanneroo and operated under a joint agreement with the Cities of Swan and Joondalup to sort the kerbside recyclables collected from the 140,000 households. The original joint agreement was established in 2001 and has now been renewed for a further 5 year period.

The agreement includes the joint funding of a major upgrade to the facility, which more than doubled the sorting capacity and added the ability to handle mixed paper and mixed plastic. The facility is currently processing more than 32,000 tonnes of recyclables per year. The facility uses Lubo star screens to sort paper grades and manually sorts plastics and glass.

Tour of ‘The Park’

During the main tour of the Mindarie Regional Council’s Waste Disposal and Recycling Centre at Tamala Park you’ll see how WA’s largest waste management authority handles and disposes of an average 1200 tonnes of waste each day at its state-of-the-art landfill. You’ll also visit the Recycling Centre, where thousands of customers a year find what they’re looking for at bargain prices, as well as the processing of waste oils from restaurants converted to biodiesel to fuel some vehicles at the facility.

As an adjunct to the main tour, the MRC Project Manager Mr Ian Watkins will conduct a technical tour detailing the methods of construction used to create Phase II and III. Stage 2 Phase II is now accepting waste.

Fruit of the Vine, Food of the Gods Tour

Workshops and Exhibition

Snapshots to Integrating Sustainability

Wednesday Morning Session: 8.30 am – 12.30 pm

Does this sound familiar? Operations and Technical aren’t on speaking terms with Marketing, the Legal Division considers Production to be a liability—and everyone hates Finance.

As organisations shift their focus in the face of climate change and increasing consumer demand for sustainability, how do you integrate sustainability into your everyday operations? This session will cover these intriguing questions and provide some of the answers, including defining what is sustainability for an organisation and who should be doing it?

Join Keynote Speaker Jeff Seadon (New Zealand) and on-the-ground practitioners from Australia Rob Weymouth (Sustainability Facilitator, WALGA) and Kane Hardingham (Woolworths Limited) who are involved in the integrated waste management policy and programs. You will be led through a number of scenarios and be given ways in which your organisation could take on the sustainability process.

National Packaging Covenant on Trial

Charge: Being a successful government/industry partnership to reduce the environmental impact of packaging
Verdict: Guilty or Not Guilty – the public will decide

Wednesday Afternoon Session:1.30 pm – 5.30 pm

Citizen Juries are a public participation tool which presents the case and ultimately lets the public decide the verdict. In a first for the Waste & Recycle Conference a Citizen Jury process will be used to look at a major government and industry waste initiative—the National Packaging Covenant.

The National Packaging Covenant is a voluntary initiative by Government and Industry, to reduce the environmental effects of packaging on the environment. It is designed to minimise the environmental impacts arising from the disposal of used packaging, conserve resources through better design and production processes, and facilitates the re-use and recycling of used packaging materials. The Covenant has just reached its mid- term review.

The Covenant has often been bathed in controversy, with the question being asked “is industry just trying to avoid regulation through involvement in the Covenant?” On the other hand, “the National Packaging Covenant is a unique forum in which Government and industry have come together cooperatively to achieve a common goal?”.

Come and hear about the Covenant’s success stories, the projects which have received funding, and how industry regulates packaging. Join the citizens on the jury in contemplating the fate of the Covenant.

Bins Workshop:

One Bin: Two Bins: Three Bins: More? Best Practice Kerbside Performance

Wednesday Full Day Session: 8.30 am – 5.30 pm

How many bins, how often and what should you put in them? Western Australia is a diverse state with many different collection systems in place to suit the varying populations and communities.

In other states in Australia measures of best practice include cost efficiency and yield. However, with changing emphasis to consider sustainability and climate change, are these measures sufficient?

The workshop will explore:

Speakers will include Bruce Bowman (Bowman & Associates Pty Ltd), John Kernahan (Sulo), Paul MacBride (Transpacific Cleanaway Ltd) and Justin Lang (Zero Waste SA).

Outdoor Exhibition

Wednesday Afternoon Option: 1.30 pm–5.30 pm

The Waste and Recycle 2008 Conference will have an External Trade Exhibition located in the car park diagonally opposite the Conference venue. This External Trade Exhibition is primarily aimed at providing delegate with the opportunity to view larger plant and equipment that have relevance to the waste management industry. The External Trade Exhibition will be open from Tuesday to Friday.

In essence, this is an Expo for those who like the big toys!
