Keynote Speakers

We are excited to welcome the following internationally recognised Keynote Speakers to present at this year’s Conference.

Jeff Seadon

Manager, Sustainable Business Group, Ministry for the Environment, New Zealand

Topics of interest: Developing sustainability through an integrated approach and waste avoidance.

After thirteen years as an academic in Auckland, Jeff moved to Wellington to join the Ministry for the Environment. In his academic career he lectured on integrated waste management and worked extensively with local government and industry, from the very small scale to globally significant companies. His move to Wellington coincided with the passage of the Waste Minimisation Bill through Parliament. As a manager in the Sustainable Business Group at the Ministry, part of his role has been to manage the Ministry’s work for that Bill. He has also continued his work with local government and business.

Enzo Favoino

Scuola Agraria del Parco di Monza, Italy; Chair of the working group on Biological Treatment at the International Solid Waste Association and member of the Board of ECN-European Compost Network

Topics of interest: Organics and relationship with climate change.

Enzo frequently takes part as an invited expert at meetings for the “Working Group on Composting and Integrated Waste management”. He and his team have helped many governmental institutions and local authorities to implement waste management schemes, with a particular reference to options for the management of biowaste.
Enzo is involved in workshops organised by the European Commission on Sustainable Waste Management and Source Separation and is an invited expert on the European Climate Change Programme, the ‘Agriculture’ and ‘Soils’ working groups.
Enzo Favoino is currently Chair of the working group on Biological Treatment at the International Solid Waste Association, and a Member of the Board of ECN-European Compost Network.

Mike Munger

Senior Lecturer in Economics and Political Science, Duke University, USA

Topics of interest: Economics of recycling and market failure.

Prof. Munger was born on an orange farm in rural central Florida, and completed a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in economics. His first job was at the U.S. Federal Trade Commission in Washington, studying industry regulation. He later taught and worked as an administrator at Dartmouth College, University of Texas, and University of North Carolina, before moving to Duke in 1997.  He has published numerous papers on waste disposal and environmental economics, and is the current Editor of the journal Public Choice. Prof. Munger is an avid recycler of those items it makes sense to recycle.

Helen Speigelman

President, Product Policy Institute, Canada

Topics of interest: Extended Producer Responsibility.

Helen Spiegelman is co-founder and President of Product Policy Institute, a North American non-profit research and communication organisation. From 1990 to 1997, Helen was Director of Communications for the Recycling Council of British Columbia (RCBC) in Vancouver. In that role she played a critical part in building public support for producer responsibility laws in British Columbia?—?laws that are currently the most advanced and comprehensive in North America. She currently serves on the RCBC Executive.
