The last year has seen some radical changes for the waste and recycling industry, from all time high prices for recycled commodities to a 50–70% drop in the price paid for the same commodities.

This challenging situation has lead the community, industry and government to re-examine how we value waste and recycling (economically and socially) and to consider the nature of risk within our industry and how we plan, manage, understand and account for it.

The Conference Committee understands the impact the current global market is having on the waste industry and therefore we have reviewed our operating costs and the price of attending has been significantly reduced. We will continue to provide the highest level of presentations and workshops which still makes Waste & Recycle the ‘must attend’ conference.
In an environment of uncertainty, this year’s Waste & Recycle Conference will take a view of the economic, social and environmental impacts of the choices we make. We’ll also be posing the central question of the dilemmas faced by the industry—are we in the Business of Risk or is it just plain Risky Business?

The 2009 Waste & Recycle Conference is hosted by Department of Environment & Conservation, Waste Management Association of Australia and Western Australian Local Government Association.
Delegates will have the opportunity to hear papers and keynote presentations, attend site tours and interactive workshops, participate in the panel sessions—or tailor a combination of these to fit their schedule—and help address some of the risky issues facing our industry.
